To Villafranca Montes de Oca via Santo Domingo de la Calzada ( Monday May 22)


I start walking early in the morning again - 6 am is too early really as breakfast only started at 7 am in my B&B and it’s simply too dark for the first half hour. I have doubts again wether I am on the Camino as Insee literally nothing out here. The beauty though is the complete quietness - I have the Camino to myself at this time.

After a good 2 hour I reach Santo Domino - amazing to see how rich the Spanish church is, I think to myself as I pass by the convent of San Francisco and the cathedral. The wealth is in full display here and could be put to work in this world of hunger and need. On the one hand side I am impressed by the different styles and materials the chapels and cathedrals are made out of and on the other side I see the chance to put all this wealth ( which was squeezed out of poor farmers and stolen from the colonies) to better use in this world.









On I walk first along the freeway and then along the National Road. When I reach Belorado I know that I am getting closer to Villafranca Montes del Oca. But I take my time and have lunch in Belorado: toast with Tomate spread and bacon from an Iberico pig - love this food! The last leg of my day is a constant up and down on a rubble way next to the freeway. In front of me I spot a pilgrim with fancy sport shoes with absolute no sole. How did she make it this far? She must feel every little stone in this shoe. Here a free advice to all my future pilgrims: wear the right shoes! This Camino is not a walk in the park it’s through any kind of landscape you can imagine. Get shoes with a thick sole. I feel like a shoe sales person, but these thoughts accompany me all the way to my target.

  Hop over to Sarria My mom always used to say: if you have nothing good to say don’t say anything, especially when it’s about the church. Well, that’s her….now here is me and my experience at the monetary Samos. I get to Samos around noon and my room is supposingly not ready; so I join a guided tour through the monastery which is very informative, but as I find out later, some of the facts were altered a little bit. We are told that there are 11 monks currently at the monastery - which later turns out to be only 5 including 2 Novizes. That is kind of strange, because fellow pilgrims reported that there were at least 40 monks 7 years ago during mz first Camino. The Mo starry burned down twice. In the 16th century and in 1951 due to an explosion in the destillary and was rebuilt every time. So ye, Samos was founded in the 6th century and is probably one of the oldest in Europe, but the building itself is from the 20th Century. 5 years ago the leadership in this monastery changed and...

  Hello A Paso de Formiga During one of my previous Caminos I passed by this place and was enchanted about the cool bar and nice guest rooms - so I thought let’s give it a try and stay there tonight. But first I had to leave Sarria in the right direction - as I went to the monastery yesterday ( 100 meters above my hotel) I saw why I lost my way on the two previous Casinos - I oversaw the right turn to the monastery before because of the stunning SARRIA sign. When I get to the monastery for evening mass though I have to realize that no mass takes place here tonight - so I walk back down to the church in town and join the mass there. Early in the morning this extra way came in handy as I now know that I have  to pass by the monastery first. The way today is challenging 1500 meters up and 1400 meters down the path.   With energy to Carrión de los Condes Whenever I am in need of buying some essentials I have been pretty good in all different countries in the past - now listen what happened in Fromista. I can only find a pharmacy that’s still open and rush in to buy some toothpaste - I was amazed how many small tubes they had and grab the most shiny one. As I need to eat something, it’s 6 pm and all I really had was breakfast so far, I compromise to eat a boccadillo with eggs and bacon in the only open bar since restaurants only open at 20:00. Back in the hotel I want to try out my new tooth paste and start brushing my teeth. That paste was awfully stiff and kind of starts sticking to my teeth - I check the tube again - and what can I say, I bought temporary glue for prosthesis. Shoot, I try to rub it off first my toothbrush and then my teeth - this purchase was bollocks. I go to bed early even though I already pla to start tomorrow late as it’s supposed to be extremely windy until 8 am. In the...
